How To Create An Indoor Herb Garden

A hanging herb garden will place rosemary, basil, and oregano at your fingertips during meal prep sessions. Use a wooden board, craft paint, mason jars or plant tins, hardware, and lighting to create a rustic design that will complement the country decor in your kitchen.

Materials

First, gather the materials below.

  • rectangle-shaped board
  • sandpaper
  • paint
  • paintbrush
  • steel wool
  • polyurethane
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • hammer
  • nail
  • screwdriver
  • pipe clamps
  • mason jars
  • plant tins
  • herbs
  • electrical tape
  • wire hanging kit or metal hooks
  • LED lighting

You can get many of the materials needed at a hardware store.

Prepare The Wood

A rectangle-shaped piece of wood will be used as the backdrop of the hanging garden. Choose a wood variety that contains veining, knots, and other signs of distress, or use sandpaper and painting techniques to provide the wood with a weathered appearance. After lightly sanding the wood, apply coats of paint to the front of the board.

Once the paint has dried, use a rough grit sheet of sandpaper or a piece of steel wool to add marks across the painted surface. Once you have acquired the degree of weathering that you prefer, add a clear coat of polyurethane to the board's surface. A water-based product will not yellow and will preserve the fresh paint.

Secure The Jars Or Tins And Add Lighting

Clear mason jars or metal plant tins can be used to house the herb varieties. Purchase a series of containers that are the same size and a set of metal pipe clamps that are adjustable. Use a hammer to drive the ends of the clamps through the front of the board. Secure one jar or tin inside of each clamp. The jars should be suspended vertically.

A screwdriver may be needed to tighten or loosen each clamp so that it fits snugly around each jar or tin. Plant and water the herb varieties that you prefer. Use black electrical tape to create name tags for the herbs. Line up one tape strip underneath each container. Use a light color of acrylic paint to apply the name of each herb variety to the tape strips.

A picture-hanging kit that contains wire or metal clips can be used to secure the plant display to one of your kitchen walls. LED bulbs will supply concentrated lighting, which will aid in the herb growth process. Purchase an LED light setup that contains a series of bulbs, brackets, and installation materials. The placement of the display may allow for natural sunlight to aid with growth during the day. This will limit the amount of time that you need to operate the LED lighting.
